Cheryl Carstens, PMHNP-c, FNP-c
Cheryl is a Board-certified Psych Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Family Nurse Practitioner. She has been a FNP for over 20 years graduating from Northern Arizona University in 2001. She has worked in this role for several agencies in northern Arizona including North Country Community Health Center, Winslow Indian Health Care Clinic, Coconino County Detention Facility and her own private practice. She obtained her Psych Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in 2022 from Frontier Nursing University in Lexington, KY.
As Cheryl worked in Family Practice settings and cared for an array of medical conditions, she realized that often her patients’ untreated mental health was getting in the way of their general health and well-being. This inspired her to return to school to obtain her PMHNP. “I truly love being able to provide mental health care and be a part of the growth and healing of my patient,” CCarstens.
Cheryl grew up in the Midwest and is thankful for the unique experiences she gained from her youth in a small farming community. She loves spending time outdoors; going for drives in the woods, working in her garden and taking walks with her 5 y/o yellow lab. She also enjoys spending time with her family which includes 4 spunky grandchildren.
Cheryl strives to provide an experience that is relaxed, supportive and effective.
As a Nurse Practitioner, she prescribes medication when necessary, orders and reviews appropriate tests, and may provide brief therapy. She does not treat patients solely with therapy and most of her patients have a collaborating therapist. She also may suggest and incorporate other modalities allowing for a wholistic approach to care.
Conditions commonly treated by Cheryl include anxiety, depression, bipolar, PTSD, OCD, insomnia, psychosis and ADHD.
